The Targa
Florio was born in 1906, as a result of a bet Vincenzo Florio threw in the
world’ s face: organizing an automobilistic Rallye in Sicily, on a track
where the bends wind iike serpents, the downward shides are steep and the
roads themselves covered in dust and full of hoies. lt was a bet that became
myth, its concrete manifestation a iegendary sporting event which never iost
its appeai, which saw the most prestigious names of the automobile industry
as weil as the most famous aces of the steering wheel, such as Nuvolari,
Varzi, Magliohi, Gendebien, Fangio, Moss, Von Trips and Vaccarella engaged
in epic batties on those unique and dangerous roads. They are stili there,
witnesses of an 82-year-long story.Of all the car races still held today,
the Targa Florio is the oldest; the likewise mythical “indiananpols” being
still a year yonger

TARGA FLORIO
Nasce
nel 1906 da una scommessa impossibile lanciata ai mondo da Vincenzo
Florio, quella di organizzare una competizione automobilistica in Sicilia,
su un percorso dove le curve stringono e si allungano come serpenti, le
discese sembrano filettature di una vite ed il fondo stradale è polveroso e
pieno di buche. Ebbene,quella scommessa si concretizzò in un autentico mito,
in una manifestazione leggendaria e affascinante che vide le più importanti
Case automobilistiche e i più famosi assi del volante, da Nuvolari a Varzi,
da Maglioli a Gendebien, da Fangio a Moss, da Von Trips a Vaccarella,
cimentarsi in epiche battaglie su quelle
irripetibili ed insidiose strade, ancora lì, testimoni di una storia lunga
82 anni. La “Targa Florio” rimane fra quelle che ancora oggi si disputano, la
corsa più antica del mondo, seguita ad appena un anno di anzianità in meno,
dalla altrettanto mitica “lndianapolis”.
